it's woven differently so that it's softer. it's woven like satin except that it is cotton. [same thing as velvet/velveteen. both satin & velvet are typically made of silk.] a sateen 240 feels like a regular 300 or 350.
the sheets were actually $9.99 apiece (flat, fitted). they were a loss leader. the pillowcases were the same price as both the sheets! of course, it wasn't nearly as bad as the larger-sized sheets ($40, i think, for a flat or fitted queen size, $60 for the king).
